Salerno was the first large scale opposed landing on the continent of Europe in World War 2.
This book shows how the operation nearly foundered on the beaches. It reveals General Mark Clark in his first active command as a man who had much to learn, and also shows the calibre and competence of Eisenhower as Supreme Commander.
The battle of Salerno was in doubt for more than nine days, with the possibility that the German army under Kesselring would push the Allies back into the sea. It was only when more air and sea support was given that the armies could establish the beachhead and push on to Naples.
A little known part of the operation was a large scale mutiny by British troops who arrived on the beaches and then refused to go into action. This was a complicated story involving regimental loyalties and misunderstood promises.
This is a detailed and well researched history, and the lessons learned from Salerno were applied to later invasions
The book is a hardback, ex library copy, with the usual library rubber stamps on the flyleaf pages. Otherwise it is in very good condition with a very good dust jacket in a protective sleeve. Size 240mm x 160mm, 256 pages plus 8 pages of photographs and endpaper maps

Farewell Campo 12
First Edition, published 1945
The book is in very good condition with a good dust jacket which has a little wear to the top and bottom of the spine. The dust jacket is not price clipped, and shows its original price of 10 shillings and 6 pence
Size 210mm x 140mm
184 pages with 1 photograph and endpaper map
A remarkable book. As the dust jacket to the left shows, the author was a high ranking officer who was held in what (by the standard of WW2 prisoner of war camps) was a comfortable captivity. Despite this, he planned and managed an escape, only to return to active service and be killed in Normandy in 1944.
The book was written during the period he was in England before returning to active service, and was published , in 1945, after his death
